She is an absolute pleasure to work with! Very quick (which was crucial in my situation), professional, and very on-point. Oh and a good laugh too, which is very important.
Sincere recommendation
Keep up to date with our socials.
If you’re a hairdresser or beauty business, IR35 is one of those bits of legislation you cannot afford to ignore.
There can be a very fine line between ‘self employed’ and ‘basically employed’ if someone is renting a salon chair.
You need a proper contract in place covering how they work, how they are paid and how the chair rental arrangement actually works.
If you are collecting the money centrally, make sure it is distributed properly. You cannot hold onto it and then pay them like a salary!!
Get it right from the start. If you are unsure, give us a shout. 💚

Accrual accounting and cash accounting are not the same thing. 🤔
Cash accounting shows money when it actually comes in or goes out.
Accrual accounting shows income and costs when they happen, even if the money has not moved yet.
PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT – ⚠️ Accounting services are NOT like Chanel handbags; the price does not match the quality!! 👜
As a bare minimum, this should be what you are looking for;
1. Timely VAT Reporting – not missing deadlines and causing penalties
2. PAYE, P11D and ERS – on time every time as they say!
3. Year-end adjustments posted to your accounts, not dumped into the balance sheet hoping you won’t notice!
4. Debits and Credits in the right place. Obvious, but still important!
If you don’t get any of that and are paying the ends of the earth then it is time to revaluate those services.
Please, for the love of all things Xero, check who actually has access to your account.
Ex-staff, old accountants, people who helped you “just once” in 2021… they do not all need to still be in there.
Your numbers are not a group project.
Audit your Xero access. Remove who does not need to be there. Thank yourself later.
A card receipt is not the same as a VAT receipt.
Please read that again if you have ever uploaded the tiny card machine slip and thought, “that’ll do.” (It will not always do.)
If you are VAT registered and buying something for the business, your bookkeeper needs the receipt that actually shows the VAT details.
We don’t enjoy being difficult.
Ask for the VAT receipt at the till.
Upload that one.
Save everyone the receipt treasure hunt.

We’re sending thoughts and prayers for Sally at this very difficult time… 😔🎻
Words of encouragement are vastly appreciated 💔

Want a gold star from your bookkeeper? (and feel great power and visibility over your numbers)
Ask better questions. Upload the things. Review the numbers before everything is on fire.
We love a business owner who wants to understand what is going on, not just shove it all in a folder and hope for the best.
Yes, we can do a backflip.
No, Sally is not proving it.
Save this for the next time you want to make your bookkeeper’s day.

Just keep the paperwork…
Receipts. Invoices. Bank statements. Mileage. Payroll records.
Not for your accountant.
For you.
Because if HMRC asks, “it’s somewhere in my emails” will not cut it.
Save it somewhere sensible. Name it properly. Keep it for at least 7 years. Thank us later.

A letter from HMRC, 10 calculators, 5 phone calls, a tub of sweets and a dream 💪
These are the bookkeeper’s equivalent of a first aid kit 🤷♀️

We love your tan and the fact that you took some time out! ☀️
HMRC might not be so pleased when they found out it was fully expensed through the business…

You’ve just spotted that brown envelope through your letterbox and all signs are pointing to a code red, carnage, run for the hills kind of mood for the forseeable future.
Yes, we get where you’re coming from, but have you opened it yet?
We mean BEFORE you make a run for it. Have you seen what’s actually inside that envelope?
If not, it’s good to remember that brown doesn’t always equate to ‘your business is on fire’ – it’s not always that bad.
It could be as simple as a new tax code, even.
This is what you’re going to do ➡️
